Art and design

Intent

At Bandon Hill Primary School, we regard Art and Design as an essential part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Art and Design provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thoughts and ideas.

Our Art and Design curriculum enables children to develop their creativity, knowledge and skills, whilst being inspired to experiment and invent their own art work. The National Curriculum equips children with the tools to become artists, thinking critically and have an in-depth knowledge of artists and how art has shaped our history and cultures.

It is our intent to provide all children with the fundamental skills, techniques and knowledge needed to independently create their own unique drawings, paintings, sculptures, and crafts.

Implementation

The teaching and implementation of the Art and Design Curriculum at Bandon Hill Primary School is based on the National Curriculum. Children have a weekly art lesson alternating each half term with Design and Technology.

In EYFS the children have daily access to a variety of media and materials which they can explore to produce their own creative work. Provision is carefully planned to suit the interests of the children, whilst developing the necessary skills they are working on. Through on-going observations of the children, the adults have an in-depth knowledge about each child’s development. We place high importance on EYFS, as we know this provides the fundamental base for all learning.

In Key Stage 1 pupils are taught:

  1. To use a range of materials creatively to design and make products
  2. To use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination
  3. To develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space
  4. About the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.

In Key Stage 2 pupils are taught:

  1. To develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design
  2. To create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas
  3. To improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay]
  4. About great artists, architects and designers in history.

In EYFS we document children’s art through our classroom and school displays so that the children can see their own artwork and also put evidence in their learning journeys. KS1 and KS2 both use sketchbooks to document their art learning journey, they are given time with their sketch books to practise new skills before applying them to create a new piece of artwork.

Coordinated whole-school project work ensures that art is given high status in the curriculum.  This includes each year group’s participation in creating art work for the end of year school production and whole school artist focus work for displays.

Impact

The impact of our art and design curriculum can be seen not only in our children’s sketch books but also through classroom displays and the school environment where individual and collaborative outcomes are celebrated and valued.

Assessment of children's learning in Art and Design is an ongoing monitoring of children's understanding, knowledge and skills by the class teacher, throughout lessons. This assessment is then used to inform differentiation, support and challenge required by the children. Progress can also be demonstrated through the use of sketchbooks to record ideas, reflections, analysis of artists and development of technical skills.

Regular scrutiny of pupil’s work, teachers’ marking in line with our school marking policy, lesson observations, learning walks, pupil voice and book moderation opportunities are all carried out to ensure we are offering the best Art and Design curriculum at Bandon Hill.
