School Council

What is a School Council?

At Bandon Hill Primary School, our School Council members are a highly valued group of children who represent the voice and opinions of all the children within our school. The School Council is an elected group of children who meet regularly and work together to represent the pupils of Bandon Hill Primary School.

The School Council is an ideal opportunity for pupils to get more involved in the way the school is run. The School Council benefits the whole school, pupils and teachers, because it provides opportunities for pupils to communicate their feelings as well as influence decisions that are made.

How long can you be a School Councillor for?

School Councillors are elected to represent their classes for one year.  They are elected by their class peers at the beginning of each year.

How is the School Council run?

We have an active School Council with two members representing each class from Year 1 upwards. The School Council follows the principles of a democratic society to make decisions. At the meetings, held by Miss Browning, we decide what we can do to improve the school. We don’t just decide ourselves what to do, our class peers put their ideas down too, through questionnaires and class discussions. To decide on the class representatives we hold class elections each September.

The School Council is run and led by the children, supported by members of staff, and takes an active role in making decisions and suggestions on behalf of the children in the school.

Members of the Council meet regularly, taking part in organising fundraising events, discussing issues related to the curriculum and taking suggestions from their class to the meetings.

What have we done so far?

At Bandon Hill, our School Council reps are heavily involved with organising and running stalls at the Christmas and Summer Fairs to raise money. This has included a 'decorating your own gingerbread man biscuit' stall at a recent Christmas Fair. The member of the School Council then decide how they would like to spend the money to improve our school. In recent years, they have purchased playground equipment for the children to use during playtimes with the money rasied.

This year, they really enjoyed meeting other headteacher's within the Greenshaw Learning Trust as part of a Reading Audit to discuss how Reading is taught at Bandon Hill.

The School Council representatives have played an integral role in deciding which characteristics of learners will be used for our new Bandon Hill vision, from Spring 2024, to encourage and inspire children to take an active role in their learning.
